For Indian engineers, the MBA ROI has narrowed sharply. Three years of strong work history now beats most non-IIM MBAs.
In 2015, an MBA from a top Indian school added ₹15-20L to your starting package and accelerated your career by 3-4 years. In 2026, the delta for non-IIM-ABC schools is closer to ₹5L, and the opportunity cost (two years of foregone salary + ₹25L fees) has ballooned. Three years of strong product or engineering experience at a tier-1 startup now creates more career optionality than a tier-2 MBA. For IIM A/B/C the math still works for career switchers — for everyone else, the honest answer is that experience compounds faster than the MBA premium amortises.
