5-star inverter AC vs 3-star non-inverter at Rs 35K vs Rs 22K. We tracked one Indian household's power bill over 8 months. Here is which AC actually pays for itself.

Across 8 months of tracking in a Bengaluru 2BHK, a 5-star inverter AC (1.5T) used 38% less electricity than a 3-star non-inverter at the same temperature. Monthly bill difference: Rs 1100-1800 during summer months. Annual savings: Rs 8,000-12,000. With the Rs 12-15K price gap between 3-star non-inverter and 5-star inverter, payback period is 14-22 months in homes that run AC 6+ hours daily. Below 4 hours/day usage, the math doesn't work — buy non-inverter. What matters more than star rating: AC sizing. A 1.5T AC in a 250 sq ft room costs more to run than a properly-sized 1T in the same space. Most Indian homes are oversized — pay an HVAC technician Rs 500 to measure properly before buying.

The budget breakdown is really helpful. Was planning ₹1L for 2 but looks like we need to revise up.
