6 tasks total
1
Set a real budget
1 week
On-road price + insurance + accessories. Total budget should be no more than 6x your monthly take-home if buying outright, or EMI under 15% of monthly income.
2
Choose fuel + body type
2 weeks
City <12K km/year: petrol. Highway >20K km/year: diesel or hybrid. SUV vs sedan: SUV for tier-2 roads, sedan for highways + city.
3
Shortlist 3 cars and test drive
2 weeks
Don't commit to one. Test drive 3 across 30+ minutes each. Note real-world fuel economy estimates, NVH, AC performance.
4
Negotiate with 3 dealers
1 week
Get OTR quotes from 3 dealers (same brand). Use the lowest as leverage. Always negotiate accessories — Rs 25-50K usually negotiable.
5
Pick insurance smartly
1 week
Compare on Policybazaar — same insurer, different rates from dealer. Always get zero-dep cover for first 3 years.
6
Pre-delivery + delivery checks
1 day
Inspect car day before delivery. Test all electrical, AC, infotainment. Check chassis number, odometer (should be under 50km). Don't rush this.
